Checkerboard Cookies are a visually striking and delicious treat that features a distinctive checkerboard pattern made from alternating squares of vanilla and chocolate dough. These cookies are perfect for special occasions, offering both visual appeal and delightful flavor.

The dough for checkerboard cookies is made from a mixture of flour, sugar, butter, and eggs, with one portion flavored with vanilla extract and the other with cocoa powder. The dough is rolled out into thin sheets and then cut into strips. The strips are then arranged in an alternating pattern to create the checkerboard effect.

Once the dough strips are assembled, they are chilled to firm up before being sliced into individual cookies. The cookies are then baked until golden and slightly crisp. The result is a cookie that is not only delicious but also a feast for the eyes, with its striking black-and-white pattern.

These cookies are perfect for serving at tea parties, holiday gatherings, or any event where you want to impress your guests with a beautiful and tasty treat.

Their combination of buttery, tender dough and the visually appealing checkerboard pattern makes Checkerboard Cookies a favorite among cookie lovers, offering a delightful and sophisticated dessert experience.

Original Flavor Dough

Chocolate Flavor Dough

  1. In a clean bowl, put in softened butter and sugar, beat until smooth. Add in egg, and beat until well combined. Add in cake flour and cornstarch (add in cocoa powder when making the chocolate flavor dough), mix until all ingredients come together and form a dough.

  2. Place the dough on parchment paper, cover it with parchment paper, and roll it flat into a 1 cm thick and 8 cm wide rectangle. Chill the dough in the fridge.
  3. When the dough is set, take it out of the fridge. Slice and form them into checkerboard pattern.
  4. Place all the cookies on the baking tray. Preheat the oven to 302℉(150℃) and bake for 17 minutes.

By cake flour, I mean low protein flour, which normally contains 7-9% protein (Mine is around 8%). Not self-rising flour.
