Description

Dutch Oven Bread is a rustic, artisanal loaf that boasts a crispy, golden crust and a soft, airy interior. This bread is perfect for anyone who enjoys homemade, hearty bread with a rich, complex flavor and a satisfying chew.

The dough for Dutch Oven Bread is typically made from a simple mixture of flour, water, yeast, and salt. After mixing, the dough is allowed to rise slowly, often overnight, which develops its flavor and texture. The long fermentation time allows the yeast to fully develop, creating a chewy crumb and a deep, complex flavor.

The key to Dutch Oven Bread’s unique texture and crust is the baking method. The dough is shaped into a round loaf and placed in a preheated Dutch oven. The lid traps steam during the initial baking phase, which helps the bread rise and develop a crispy crust. After a set amount of time, the lid is removed to allow the crust to brown to perfection.

The result is a loaf with a crackling crust and a tender, airy interior, perfect for slicing and serving with butter, jam, or as a base for sandwiches. Dutch Oven Bread can also be customized with various add-ins such as seeds, nuts, or dried fruit, making it a versatile addition to any meal.

Instructions

  1. In a bowl of warm water, put in 5g instant yeast, mix well.

  2. Put all the ingredients into the stand mixer bowl, beat until it comes together. Grease the mixing bowl with vegetable oil/olive oil, place the dough in it and let it rise until doubled in size.
  3. Dust some flour onto its surface, scrape the dough out of the bowl, and divide into two pieces. If you have a large enough Dutch oven, you can skip this part. Mine is too small to take all the dough at one time.
  4. Shape each piece into a dough ball, let rest until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat the oven to 410℉(210℃), place the Dutch oven in it and bake for 30 minutes.
  6. Dust the dough with some flour, take the Dutch oven out and place it on a trivet (because it is very hot right now), carefully place the dough into the Dutch oven (Be careful, it is very hot!), cover with the lid, and bake for 30 minutes. If you did not divide the dough, it may take more time to bake. Take the lid off for the last 5 minutes. Watch the heat, not to burn the surface of the bread as I did. Take the bread out of the Dutch oven and let it cool down on the cooling rack and then slice.
